Brilliant Highlights in the 3rd Wuhan Design Biennale

The exhibition will be jointly carried out by Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and three places in Wuhan simultaneously. For exhibition scale or technology content, this Biennale can be called the best one in the history with brilliant highlights.
450 works fully showing the charm of future urban architectural design
450 design works will be displayed in this Biennale and divided into six parts namely “History • Inheritance”, “Strength • Contemporary”, “Leader • Future”, “Vigor • Folk”, “Remote • Symphony” and “Prosperity • New Prominent”, with the exhibition scale and variety far more than that of the previous two biennales. Through drawing restoration, data presentation, original scale model and micro films, the public can not only appreciate a batch of excellent historical buildings in Wuhan, but also prospect the future of Wuhan architectural design.
The module of “Strength • Contemporary” showing the “resources” of Wuhan engineering design is especially worth to see. About 1/3 national famous projects and buildings originates from “Wuhan Design” like the Three Gorges Project, Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the first cross-sea bridge in China. “Strength • Contemporary” mainly shows 20 outstanding design works from Wuhan design enterprises and visitors will be clear about the strength of Wuhan engineering design just at a glance of prints and sculpture models changed from abstract drawings by artists.
“In fact, design is not so far away from the public.” When mentioning features of this biennale, openness is emphasized by the principal of Wuhan Urban Construction Committee so the “Vigor • Folk” module is newly added. All works in this module are selected from the folk to interpret opinions of common people on landmarks among new achievements of Wuhan’s construction and development through displaying pictures about changes of Wuhan urban styles and new construction styles.
Design needs to be inherited and new forces are also absolutely necessary. In the part of “Prosperity • New Prominent”, the public can appreciate award-winning works of 2015 Autodesk Revit National College Sustainable Architectural Design Competition (the most important competition for architecture majors in higher education institutions).
3D print technology may feast your eyes with moveable design drawings.
You may probably have seen 3D printed chocolates, teeth, crafts or other small objects, but have you ever seen 3D printed architectures? 3D digital printing technology for architectures will be shown on site in “Leader•Future” part, feasting your eyes.
As known by the journalist, it’s the BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology that’s mainly applied in 3D printed architectures. Construction engineering design mainly depended on two-dimensional drawings before, but with the development of technology, BIM 3D visualization technology nowadays is being broadly applied in the architecture design industry because this way of design can present designers' thought realistically and completely and in a full scale. 3D printers can automatically print architecture models according to procedures set in the computer, printing jointing materials layer by layer along locus preset and overlying in grid type instead of just printing exterior walls.

Architectural design drawings can immediately become three-dimensional by means of 3D print and the public can directly see what a building will look like in the future.

Compared with the previous two biennales, “Leader • Future” exhibition hall is a fresh attempt in this year with technological progress and achievements of engineering design like frontier technologies, technological innovation and thought innovation reflected in items displayed. Except the BMI technology, the public can also see from “Leader • Future” module latest cutting-edge technologies like housing industrialization, green architectural designs, establishment of integrated pipe networks and intelligent system applied in design and development and utilization of underground space.
Multicity joint exhibition
One-stop watch the first-class design from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen
Another highlight in this Biennale is to dock with China Exploration & Design Association, selecting award-winning works across the country and several excellent works for exhibition and inviting urban construction departments and exploration and design units of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen to attend and visit the exhibition, realizing joint exhibition and interaction among multiple cities.
“Both of the previous two biennales focused on Wuhan designs”, said the principal of Wuhan Urban Construction Committee. Hundreds of pictures condensed from 11 excellent modern buildings in Wuhan and more than 50 classic projects were displayed in the first biennale while in the second biennale the scale of items on display expanded to more 300 with just a few from outside of Wuhan.
As introduced by a principal of Wuhan, the competition of applying for “World Design Capital” is very fierce, with only Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen succeeded in the application in China as far. Selected cities must go through strict review procedures and meet seven standards including design works with a certain scale and level, a certain number of design schools with high-level faculties and good teaching quality, a design industry able to drive the development of urban creative industry, etc. Multicity joint exhibition is conducive to enhancing communication between Wuhan design enterprises and outstanding cities for design and interaction between brilliant domestic or even international designers with local designers by means of designers’ explanation and artistic expression.
Simultaneous Exhibition in Three Places
Optical Valley, Tanhualin, Central-South Architectural Design Institute
Appreciate the beauty of design from three perspectives.
Different from the previous two biennales, this biennale will be carried out simultaneously in multiple places in Wuhan, namely Central-South Architectural Design Institute, Tan Hualin Campus, Hubei Institute of Fine Acts and Star of Optical Valley, CSCEC, East Lake High-Tech Development Zone.
Deputy Director of Wuhan Urban and Rural Construction Committee said that simultaneous exhibition in multiple places is one of the highlights in this Biennale which aims to avoid the pressure from the stream of people and traffic in a single exhibition area and enlarge the influence of the Biennale from regional level.
Emphasis of the three exhibition halls differs from each other so the public can appreciate beauty of design from different angles. “Star of Optical Valley, CSCEC” is the main venue of this Biennale with almost 200 design items including exploration and design, real estate, digital architectural exhibition and domestic and overseas excellent works on display; in Central-South Architectural Design Institute more than 150 items listed in 2015 Nationwide Exhibition of Excellent Engineering Projects in Exploration & Design Industry are on display and Tan Hualin Campus, Hubei Institute of Fine Acts mainly focuses on Wuhan outstanding historical buildings including Yellow Crane Tower, Jianghan Customhouse and Qingchuan Pavilion, Jingchu buildings, Han Embroidery and hand-painted works of folk singers and sculptures and traditional Chinese paintings of artist Li Sanhan, Chen Lijun and Xu Guoming.
